Etihad Airways has launched a “Flying Nanny” service for in-flight childcare.

The service is to provide families a ‘helping hand’ with childcare and also to look after unaccompanied minors on long haul flights.

To date, 300 Etihad Airways cabin crew have completed the enhanced training for the role. The course includes in-depth training, focusing on child psychology and sociology, “enabling the Flying Nannies to identify different types of behaviour and developmental stages that children go through and how to appreciate the perspective and needs of travelling families”, the airline said.

Families transiting at Abu Dhabi airport will also be informed by the Nannies of the various baby changing and child facilities available. Also available are the children’s play areas in the premium lounges and at Gate 32 Terminal 3.

200 of the Flying Nannies will be working on the airline’s long haul flights by the end of 2013.

Gulf Air introduced Sky Nannies on some routes in 2003.
