A Thomson flight bound for Lanzarote was forced to divert to Porto airport in Portugal because of a row on the aircraft.

The row broke out between Lee Doran, 17, and his stepfather David Laughton, 39. The quarrelling got so much that the pilot was forced to divert and once on the ground in Porto airport, the whole family were taken off the aircraft to be met by police officers.

The estimated cost of the unusual situation is said to be around £35,000.

A spokesperson for the airline said that the diversion was a last resort and apologised to the passengers on the flight: “We would like to apologise to passengers for any disruption encountered during the flight.

“Unfortunately a party of passengers became disruptive on board and as a last resort the flight had to be diverted to Portugal.

“Thomson operates a zero tolerance policy with regards to any disruptive behaviour on board and incidents of this type are extremely rare.”
