Save money by flying on a Tuesday

Now if you work, it often makes sense to save on your annual leave days by going on a holiday over the weekend, therefore stretching your holiday days further across the year. This may seem like a sensible option, but according to a report by consumer magazine Which? catching a flight at the weekend could prove very costly.

The cheapest day to fly was found to be Tuesday. The report found that an Easyjet flight from Gatwick to Alicante on a Tuesday was around 35% (£28) less than the same flight on a Friday.

Tips to avoid higher fares also include travelling on early flights (before 7.30am) on British Airways, with the reverse being true for low-cost airline Easyjet, whose fares are more expensive between 5.45am and 11am. If you are staying in a hotel at your destination however, it may be prudent to incorporate the extra night’s cost if you opt for an evening flight to your destination. It might be more cost effective to rent a villa or holiday cottage instead, especially if you are travelling as a family.

The most expensive day to return from a holiday is also at the weekend, on Sunday. The cost could be around 45% (£56) more expensive with the same carrier than their Thursday return flight.

In an article in the Metro, Which? executive director, Richard Lloyd, said: “With household budgets squeezed, holidaymakers will want to make sure they are getting a good deal on their flights.

“We found that people can save a significant sum of money if they shop around and can be flexible, changing the day or time they choose to travel.”
