Register with Foreign Office if visiting Greece
February 21st, 2012 by elisa

Foreign Secretary William Hague is urging Britons going on holiday to Greece to register with the Foreign Office in the event they need to be contacted urgently if the social unrest in the country worsens.

On Sunday night 3,000 protesters clashed with riot police in Athen’s Syntagma square, with a further demonstration planned on 29th February. The action is against the Greek government’s austerity measures, which could be made worse by yesterday’s announcement of more cutbacks in return for a further €130bn rescue package.

According to a report in the Daily Mail, Hague told the paper that the Foreign Office has drawn up contingency plans for if the situation in Greece worsens and puts Britons at risk.

Britons are advised to register contact details with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office’s ‘Locate’ Service (www.locate.fco.gov.uk) so the local embassy or consulate can get in touch in the event of an emergency.
