Older travellers could benefit from subsidised holidays across EU
May 3rd, 2010 by elisa

European Union officials are considering implementing a uniformed scheme to subsidise elderly travellers who might not otherwise be able to afford a holiday.

The scheme would be based on a similar one currently working well in Spain. For every euro the Spanish Central Inland Revenue put in to the scheme they have earned 1.5 euros in return.

The scheme was proposed by EU commissioner for enterprise and industry Antonio Tajani and would be called European Senior Tourism. The Travel Association ABTAis backing the move and spokesperson Sean Tipton said the service would be extremely beneficial if rolled out across the EU.

The scheme aims to stimulate economic activity in the tourism industry in the low season, thereby tackling the serious problem of seasonality affecting the international tourist sector in Europe.

The only possible stumbling block would be the initial investment required from participants, but the fact that it has worked in Spain should be incentive enough for nations to join.
