Total time wasted waiting for planes to take off
April 5th, 2010 by elisa

A recent survey reveals that on average we spend 16 days waiting at airports throughout our lifetime, and this could be set to rise now there are extra security measures in place meaning that you have to arrive earlier and earlier to the airport before catching your plane. With recent strikes and subsequent delays and cancellations, it must feel like a lifetime for some travellers already!

To rub a little more salt into the wound, the research (conducted by a holiday park company) found that travellers spend an average of £4.72 in the airport while they wait to board their aeroplane, this is an average figure as if any of you are like me, then I’ve found that I can end up spending an awful lot more than this, often out of sheer boredom!

If you add all of this up as a nation, then we Brits will spend a total of 15,773 years in delays and queues and spend a huge £319 million while we wait to take off for our holidays.

Alas, I don’t know how we can limit this time spent, but if you’d like a cheaper time while waiting to board your plane then perhaps a little forethought while packing your bags wouldn’t go amiss. I know that there are restrictions on food and drink that you can take with you (unavoidable I’m afraid) but perhaps packing sweets and puzzle books to keep the children happy, and taking books from your shelf that you’ve meant to read for ages instead of picking up a paperback at the airport bookshop would be something to consider.

These are a couple of suggestions, but if any of our readers have any more tips on what to take with you to help pass the time in airports, especially tips for keeping young children entertained, then please leave a comment below as I’m sure we’ve all found ourselves stuck and a bit bored while waiting for our flight and would welcome the advice!
