Air France plans to be the first European carrier to fly the Airbus A380 double decked mega jumbo on the key north Atlantic route. The airline is to run daily A380 flights between Paris and New York’s JFK airport from 23rd November. This will be followed by Paris-Johannesburg during winter 2009-10.

The French flag carrier is to be the first European carrier to operate the 538-passenger superjumbo and the first airline worldwide to offer transatlantic flights between Europe and the US with the aircraft.

The airline’s chairman Jean-Cyril Spinetta said: “Each A380 will enable Air France to save 12 to 15 million euros a year, which, in today’s depressed economic climate, provides the company with the means to withstand the crisis.”
